Brian, I had much the same experience with the value of Twitter while attending a professional conference organized by the Nonprofit Technology Education Network in San Francisco this week (#09NTC). With approx. 3,800 tweets per hour, the conference hashtag trended at the top of the list just after swine flu. REQUEST: I’d be most interested in your presentation re: framework of risks and opportunities. Would you consider sharing it on SlideShare? I believe SlideShare now supports documents as well as Powerpoint files. I’ve also seen use of drop.io (another online file sharing service). I agree that supporting business aims should be the guiding purpose of CILIP’s use of Twitter or other social media services. Given that it is a membership based organisation, its members are its core business and I think there are a number of ways that membership support could be improved by using tools such as Twitter – increasing transparency, improving engagement/communication, becoming more responsive to members’ concerns/needs and even appealing to new members. Hope we don’t have to wait to long to find out what the next step will be!

Perhaps a policy statement – were Council to develop one – might simply be enabling, acknowledging that members make use of a variety of forms of communication from mail to e-mail to Web2, and that CILIP would respond to them all to the best of its staffing ability.
CILIP could also make available some ‘badges’ like the one beginning to be seen already: ‘CILIP Blogger’.
CILIP could also ‘administer’ – I use the word loosely – a series of hashtags to bring twitter discussions together.

The use of Twitter to follow the events was an amazing experiment. I wonder if more events will be open to the kind of technology that allows us to participate in events from afar – Umbrella 2009, for example. I was sorry I couldn’t stay glued to my PC screen for the whole thing. Mind you, one only had to answer a phone call, or a call of nature, to find that in just a few minutes the whole discussion had moved on dramatically. At least Dave Pattern managed to record the whole thing.
