We are concerned about the image of our blogs. We are starting a blog on chemistry (teh International Year of Chemistry is 2011) on Saturday, so we set up a blog in wordpress, purchased a suitable internet domain name, and for just a few euros the outside view is unrelated to wordpress.com.
Good job. Enough for our purposes (catquimica.cat, Chemistry in Catalan)
Timely post.

Hi Brian, long time no see :-)

I have been using wordpress.com for some time now, and I am very pleased with the services.

Sean, of course the choice of the platform depends of what you wish to offer visitors of a site. Having said that, and assuming your budget is low, I think wordpress.com makes a good candidate.

I am looking to help an Junior School to create a web presence, and I am seriously looking at Wordpress as a viable solution. Looking at other school's (paid for) websites there seems to be little functionality above what is available for free from Wordpress.

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this?

If even 10% of your thousand institutional blogs require the ad-free add on or VideoPress or custom CSS or their own domain name then very quickly the costs mount up. I think you overestimate how much effort is involved in running a multi site WordPress service. Sure, you can shift the costs to departments by directing them to WordPress but they'll still be there.
