Note that following publication of this post I received a tweet which suggested that I look at the Authorclaim service. I registered for the service and claimed 81 papers which I have written. It now lists 81 items (note access restricted to myself) - all of which I have written, but it includes quite a number of duplicate items. There seems to be no way of consolidating duplicate items. The service also has very limited functionality and can't compare with the service provided by, for example, Microsoft Academic Search. And since access is restricted to the author I can't see why anyone would be motivated to use this service.
